Naturally Better Hair!
Our beauty contributor Mae Guinto is back giving us her recommendations for naturally better hair.
I haven’t got even close to perfect skin but I have always been complimented on my locks – it’s length, glossiness and how I wear them – to the point where people ask me if I have extensions in!? I was born with thin hair, so my parentals took it upon themselves to shave my head TWICE as a child in the attempt to thicken my tresses. I wouldn’t say my hair thickened but I did have a lot more of it…
In addition, I now have a sensitive scalp which has become a pain -bigger sigh! So with all that I’m becoming more and more conscious of what I use on my head, admittedly obsessive.
Enter natural and organic products – good for you, good for the environment, good for my hair and scalp! I’m still in the early stages of learning about the ingredients and politics of what is deemed “natural and organic” but here are some of my recent favourite finds.
I hate ginger! So I was a little hesitant to use this BUT what a difference this has made to my scalp! It definitely soothed the irritation and my hair was much softer. Don’t let its runny consistency fool you, the creamy lather appears once you work the shampoo in. I’d recommend anyone with dry scalp or dandruff to try this out.
Girlllllsss… this is moisture and hydration on steroids! I’ve been a big fan of Shea Moisture for years now and this was one of my first purchases. More suited in my opinion for thicker and curly hair. I tend to use this as a mask once a week. They are a brand with a multitude of ‘Free From’s’ which get a big thumbs up from me.
I was made aware of this cute brand through High Content’s lovely Tamar. An natural brand who carry a meaningful message to save water and turn off your supply while washing. Hard to ignore when the message is bold on the packaging! This shampoo gave a much needed boost to my dull hair and felt quite therapeutic to use. My scalp felt thoroughly cleansed without irritation. I did feel my hair was a little bit on the dry side after use but nothing a little leave-in conditioner can’t fix!
With claims the product is 98.5% natural and 70% organic, it makes me feel good every time I use this shampoo! The natural cleansing agents are derived from sugar and coconut (yum!). My hair felt soft, smoother and nourished after the first use. I haven’t experienced any scalp irritation which is a big plus for me!
Odylique Gentle Herb Shampoo
Whilst researching organic brands I came across Odylique on the Soil Association website and I have not been left disappointed. This is one I see myself using forever! My scalp felt so refreshed and clean. Bye bye itchiness and flakes, hello untangled, bouncy, soft locks. I actually find using conditioners annoying but of course living in a hard water area means it’s a necessity… however with this shampoo my hair didn’t need that extra step. Happy days.
Formulated free from parabens, silicones and colourants as a detox treatment for your scalp, this gentle exfoliator left my scalp feeling squeaky clean. I noticed my roots didn’t get greasy as quick and my hair was more voluminous. I’d recommend this once week as it can be drying on the hair. In conjunction I use a rich conditioner after to zap some moisture back into my locks.
